Howard County Government is giving away free trees to County each county residence (while supplies last).  This is the sec­ond round of 2010 Trees, enti­tled 2010 MORE Trees in 2010!  Residents will need to fill out an online order form to make their selection.  (Don't forget to check with you Homeowner's Associations)

Each County res­i­dence is eli­gi­ble to choose one free native tree from the fol­low­ing selec­tion:

• Red Maple (Acer rubrum);
• Ser­vice­berry (Ame­lanchier canaden­sis);
• East­ern Red­bud (Cer­cis canaden­sis); ,
• Flow­er­ing Dog­wood (Cor­nus florida).

Start­ing Sep­tem­ber 13 at 9 a.m., order forms will be avail­able from the County website.  Trees are available on a first come, first served basis. Online order­ing will close down at 5 p.m., Wednes­day, Sep­tem­ber 22.

The two pickup sites, located in east­ern and west­ern Howard County,

• West Friend­ship Park, 12985 Fred­er­ick Road, West Friend­ship (direc­tions)
• Dorsey Build­ing, 9250 Ben­dix Road, Colum­bia (direc­tions)

The “2010 MORE Trees in 2010” pro­gram is an ini­tia­tive of the Depart­ment of Recre­ation and Parks’ Nat­ural Resources Divi­sion and the Office of Envi­ron­men­tal Sus­tain­abil­ity.  The pro­gram is funded through inter­est earned from the For­est Con­ser­va­tion Fund.  The fund was estab­lished in con­junc­tion with the County’s For­est Con­ser­va­tion laws which require devel­op­ers to pay into the fund if they do not meet forestry require­ments when devel­op­ing prop­er­ties in Howard County.
